Intersections are Dangerous
More car crashes happen at an intersection than any other place on the road, you need to be very cautious when approaching an intersection. Many drivers speed up or change lanes at intersections causing hazardous conditions.
When you approach an intersection, first you need to slow down (not when you’re already crossing it.) As you slow down and approach the intersection, look both ways and be ready to stop.
Many times vehicles speed up through intersections to try to make it through a yellow or red light. This is why you need to slow down when approaching an intersection and be prepared to stop even when you have a green light to avoid an accident. However, be aware of who is behind you. If you stop, will the car behind you be able to stop as well.
Never pass another car or change lanes at an intersection. There are so many cars approaching an intersection at the same time, you shouldn’t make any sudden changes. This could easily cause an accident.
When stopped at an intersection, make sure you look for pedestrians and bicyclists who may be crossing the intersection. In Florida, pedestrians have the right of way.
Intersection Safe Driving Tips
- Slow down before you get to the intersection.
- If you need to stop suddenly, can the car behind you stop too (are they tailgating.)
- Look for other cars racing through yellow lights, red lights, or just not paying attention.
- Stay in your lane (do not change lanes at an intersection.)
- Look for bicyclists or pedestrians crossing the street.
- Proceed with caution.
