Seat Belts Save Lives
Sixty-two percent of Florida fatalities involved in car accidents were not wearing seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA.) Seat belts save lives.
More than half of traffic accidents that cause injury or death happen within 25 miles of home. It’s important to buckle up when driving around town, not just on the highways.
In Florida, all passengers in the front seats must have a seat belt properly secured. In addition, all passengers under the age of 18 in the back seat must also have their seat belts properly secured.
In an accident, seat belts keep you from being thrown around the car and impacted by objects such as the windows, roof, and steering wheel that can severely injure you. You can also be thrown from the car without a seat belt landing on pavement or other hard objects causing severe injury or even death.
Seat Belt Safe Driving Tips
- Wear a lap belt around your hips, not your stomach (this protects your internal organs.)
- Fasten the seat belt snug.
- Wear a shoulder belt with a lap belt (not one or the other.)
